The Evolution of A Buzzword
With the definition of ‘web 2.0′ remaining as fluid as the cache la poudre, the term has already begun to outgrow it’s britches. I say this because whispers of ‘web 3.0′ have started flying around the blogosphere as start-ups with enormous amounts of VC are seeming to realize that their overuse of this particular buzzword has gotten a little tired. Of course, aforementioned start-ups are claiming web 3.0 is “something worth working towards” and it is. Translation - we have no idea what the hell it is going to be or how to make it happen.
A web 2.0 site could be defined as adhering to a specific visual paradigm and offering some form of user-generated content. Personally, I think it confuses the average person. A friend of mine asked me ’so, what’s really new about the web 2.0?’ thinking a new version of the internet had been released. These misconceptions can only get worse as we continue putting such definitive labels on abstract concepts.
